About Philip Rayner
Musician, teacher, accompanist, and Director of Music in Greater London
Philip Rayner is a professional musician and teacher based in Northwood Hills, Greater London, offering tuition in piano, singing, organ, keyboard, theory of music, and composition. He works with students aged 7 and above at all levels of ability, with a special focus on adult beginners at the piano.
Philip holds a BMus (Hons) and an MMus from the University of Huddersfield. As an undergraduate, he studied singing with Paul Wade, developing strong vocal technique to a professional standard. For his postgraduate degree, he was mentored by composer Dr. Bryn Harrison, specialising in contemporary composition. His time at Huddersfield, with its close ties to the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, gave him a lasting interest in 20th- and 21st-century repertoire, particularly avant-garde and experimental music.
In addition to private tuition, Philip is Director of Music at St. Anselm’s Church, Hatch End, where he plays the organ for weekly services. He also offers organ lessons at St. Anselm’s on Sunday afternoons for those who wish to explore the instrument.
Philip is an accomplished pianist and frequently works as an accompanist for ABRSM and Trinity examinations, often available at short notice. His accompanist work is recognised for its reliability, sensitivity, and ability to support candidates under pressure.
With over 25 years’ teaching experience, Philip has taught students across both London and Yorkshire. He began teaching even before university, working with private pupils in piano, organ, and singing. After relocating to Yorkshire for his studies, he continued to build his teaching studio, before returning to Harrow in 2012 to establish a thriving practice in Northwood Hills.
Philip’s teaching philosophy is simple: music should always be rewarding and enjoyable. He structures lessons around the student’s needs and goals, balancing technical skills with musical understanding. Whether preparing for the ABRSM or Trinity examinations, working towards GCSE or A Level Music, or learning purely for personal fulfilment, his supportive and encouraging approach ensures steady progress and lasting enjoyment.
Looking ahead, Philip continues to expand his teaching practice while performing regularly as an accompanist and organist. He welcomes new students of all ages and abilities and is always keen to help learners discover their unique musical voice.
